The Creation of a Supervolcano...in Our Day ?

A page linked here contains the following words: "Despite their potential threat, comparable to a large asteroid impact, the mechanisms and origins of super-eruptions have remained obscure." The page goes on to speak about two papers "published in the journal Nature Geoscience [that] try to solve the mystery of how super volcanoes are formed and how they erupt." The page then goes on to speak about a certain theoretical explanation for supervolcano eruptions which was given in the papers.

Yes, there seem to be a number of theories out there, plus a number of time-consuming and costly computer models created from these theories, which attempt to explain why supervolcanoes erupt so violently and on such a large scale. Possibly the number of different or even conflicting computer models which could be created could be somewhere close to the number of scientists in existence. After considering some of these different theories, the writer of this blog tends to feel that there is possibly a better explanation about the mechanics behind the super-eruption which results especially at the creation of supervolcanoes.

Now, there is something which needs to be considered. It appears that no human has ever witnessed the eruption of a supervolcano, at least not in commonly recorded history. For this reason, what causes a supervolcano to erupt so violently and on such a large scale is completely outside of the general field of existing human knowledge. Now, what do humans commonly seem to do when they have no experience with something? Yes, they commonly begin to guess at things and come up with many theories and even some outrageous fantasies, some of which are far more improbable than others.

Looking at things further, when it comes to supervolcanoes and their incredible eruptions, there are some theories out there which include a combination of things. Some of these theories include an asteroid impact, which impact is linked to, or is the initial trigger for, a massive volcanic eruption. In this case, there would generally be a large and potentially highly pressurized magma chamber which already resides not that far below the surface of the earth.

At this point, let us begin to consider some of what is being said out there, when it comes to asteroid-triggered volcanoes. A page linked here is titled Asteroid impact may have boosted volcanic eruptions in double-whammy dinosaur extinction disaster. The page speaks of a study which claims that the massive eruption that created the Deccan Traps in India was the result of the Chicxulub asteroid impact, which impact occurred on the other side of the earth from the Deccan Traps.

Now, let us look at a different scenario. Pages accessed via the following links --- (1)(2) --- ask what it would be like if an asteroid just happened to slam into the Yellowstone volcano. In the linked pages, one person states that if a killer asteroid "did hit Yellowstone, we would go from screwed to affirmatively screwed." Well, that is one way to mildly put things.

Looking further into the asteroid-impact/volcanic-eruption scenario, a page linked here is titled Large Impacts May Cause Volcanic Eruptions, which comes to us from Scientific American. The page presents information about the Sudbury impact crater in Canada. It states that the bolide which created the Sudbury crater "generated a massive melt pool, 2.5 kilometers in depth." This bolide impact "seems to have triggered eruptions of magma that came from deep in the mantle."

Returning to the Yellowstone supervolcano, a page linked here gets very adamant and strong-worded about this geologic feature being created by an asteroid strike. The page states: "There is no such thing as a 40 mile caldera without a visible rim, nor a super volcano without lava." Well, this is truly something to think about. So, at this point, let us move right along and change the course a bit, while we consider if humans may potentially get to see a supervolcano created and erupting in the days ahead.

Now, if supervolcanoes are actually a combination of an asteroid-impact/volcanic-eruption type of event, is there anything which has been written in past history which may potentially indicate that there could be one of these types of events happening on this earth, possibly even in the lifetime of many living today? And, looking at many of the signs which can be observed happening on or to this earth, does it appear that possibly such an event is potentially being prepared for, geologically, even now? Well, at this point, there may be something for at least some to consider --- something which many people will quickly reject, but, nonetheless, here it is.

An old writing, which is mentioned in a page-section linked here, speaks about a great stone being cast down, basically from the heavens to the earth. This great stone, which would logically appear to be something like an asteroid, is connected with the violent and complete destruction of a famous city which now exists upon this earth. This destruction event appears to be one in which an asteroid impact then triggers a major volcanic event, possibly even one of those supervolcanoes. Now, why would the writer feel that a major volcanic event is included in this asteroid impact event, which appears to be written about or foretold in the old writing?

Now for a bit of explanation. When it comes to a simple asteroid impact event on this earth, there is generally things like the heat, noise, rushing wind and shock wave, plus the shower of debris and the smoke. But, this lasts for a relatively short period of time and then things tend to calm down. After a while, the smoke has cleared and the dust has settled. At that point, you might say, generally speaking, life goes on --- at least that life which survived the event.

But in the case being spoken about a couple of paragraphs above, when it comes to the destruction of this famous city, the old writing declares that this city "shall be found no more at all," plus, the smoke from its destruction then "rose up for ever and ever."(1) This "being found no more at all" could be explained simply by an asteroid impact, but the smoke from its destruction going up forever would seem to indicate that there is a volcanic portion associated with this cataclysmic event.

Now, when it comes to smoke going up potentially forever, let us consider a certain location on this earth which is associated with a supervolcano. Let us consider the case of the Phlegrean Fields or Campi Flegrei (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8), which is located in Italy, on the Bay of Naples, not all that far away from Rome. It appears that the "smoke" from the type of volcanic activity which has occurred at this location has gone up for a very long time. For all we know, this "smoke" may even continue to go up forever.

And, when it comes to the types of things which are being spoken about in this blog post, there is something which possibly should be said. There is reason to suspect that many alive today will get to see one of the most incredible events ever witnessed by humans in recorded history. There is reason to suspect that many alive today may get to witness the next asteroid impact, plus the creation and massive eruption of the earth's newest supervolcano, in the rapidly approaching days ahead.
